Lisbon lies where the Tagus meets the Atlantic and is built on hills. Old trams and funiculars run between its quarters, and from the viewpoints, the miradouros, you look over red roofs down to the river.
For a capital, Lisbon is relaxed and easy to explore on foot, if the slopes don't put you off. Tram 15 runs to Belém with its monastery and tower, and the train to Cascais takes you to the beach.
